A Poet’s World

Sheena Powell is a scientist by trade, a yoga teacher by heart, and a poet by nature — she is passionate about communicating truth. Her background as an analytical chemist informs her poetry with objective observations of natural wonders – oceans, trees, birds. Her devoted study of Yoga philosophy allows a lucid perspective on love in diverse forms to manifest in words. Sheena has been using poetry as a vehicle of understanding ever since she can remember.

A Poet’s Voice

As part of a thriving poetry community in her native Miami, Sheena was proudly affiliated with the Miami Poets and the Famous Last Fridays poetry group at Books & Books, Coral Gables. She presented original works of poetry in live reads at the O, Miami Poetry Festival and the USpeak Open Verse and Story Performance Series. She served as poetry and prose judge for the Junior Orange Bowl Creative Writing contest and the Miami VA Creative Arts Festival. Sheena produced several successful community poetry events, most notably Beat Poetry at Le Chat Noir and A Tribute to [Poet] Sherwood Ross.   Sheena has been a regular featured poet on the Poetry Spectacular editions of the New American Dream podcast since 2019. After relocating to New Bern, North Carolina, she found her voice among local writers through Nexus Poets and Next Chapter Poets.

A Poet’s Creation

In 2016, Sheena was granted a residency with the Writer’s Room at the Betsy Hotel, Miami Beach, to support work on her first collection of poems Polyhymnia, a genuine passion of truth, beauty and love drawing inspiration from nature, worldly relationships, and art with music as muse. Her debut work, Polyhymnia, was named a semi-finalist for the 2025 Finishing Line Press Open Chapbook Competition and  received support from the Craven Arts Council Artist Support Grant. Sheena and her devoted husband Jenko live a happy life in New Bern with their four cats and enjoy sailing on the Neuse River.
